ONE NIGHT IT stormed. Trees were down, cable TV was snowy. Then the heat continued. We’d had several weeks of ninety and one-hundred-degree weather.

Suzie called in to work, sat in the dark, and smoked cigarettes. I didn’t understand what was going on. It felt like she always blamed me for something. When I asked her what I had done, she glared at me, or cried, as if I could fix her but wouldn’t.

We had put the house on the market and needed to be ready to show it on short notice. I couldn’t seem to keep up with it. It was a long, troubled time before the house sold. Suzie said Drew didn’t do enough. I thought, but didn’t say, that if my son were the only one I had to clean up after, my life would be a lot easier.
